木魚とは

木魚の概要

木魚は仏具の一種で、読経や念仏の際に「ぽくぽく」と音を鳴らしてリズムを整えるために使われます。

形と由来
魚の形をしている理由は、魚は目を閉じないと信じられていたため「眠らず修行に励む」という象徴とされているからです。表面には魚の鱗が彫刻されているものが多く見られます。

使用方法
小さな座布団状の台に置き、先端を布で巻いた桴（ばち）で叩きます。大きさは直径数センチから1メートル以上までさまざまです。

Mokugyo　wooden fish

• Definition
  The mokugyo, or wooden fish, is a traditional Buddhist percussion instrument used during chanting of sutras and prayers. It produces a hollow “poku-poku” sound when struck with a padded mallet.
• Shape and Symbolism
  It is carved in the shape of a fish, symbolizing wakefulness and diligence, since fish were believed never to close their eyes.
• Usage
  Monks use it to keep rhythm during sutra chanting and to help maintain focus. It is also found in temples and households as part of Buddhist rituals
